Potassium Acetate Anhydrous - Applications
INDUSTRIAL: Potassium acetate is commonly used in the manufacture of fire extinguishers and fireproofing agents. It is used as a catalyst in polymerization, as a conditioner of textiles, and as a dehydrating agent. Potassium acetate is used in the manufacture of crystal glass and carbon black. In its ACS grade, potassium acetate is sold as a reagent for use in laboratories, schools, and universities.
MEDICINE: Potassium acetate is essential to the manufacture of a specific type of penicillin. It serves as a nutrient for fermentation of potassium penicillin. Additionally, potassium acetate is used in the manufacture of antibiotics. In same cases, potassium acetate is a component of dialysis fluids.
PETROLEUM: Potassium acetate (KAc; K-Acetate) is growing in popularity as a key ingredient in potassium based drilling fluids. As an environmentally-safe alternative to potassium chloride, potassium acetate provides for more effective drilling fluids used in primary and secondary oil recovery muds. The potassium ion assists in stabilizing shale formations, thereby facilitating a more efficient recovery of oil from both onshore and offshore wells.
DEICING: The coal and mining industries rely on potassium acetate solution to transport coal and minerals during the winter season. As an environmentally-friendly alternative to DEG, potassium acetate inhibits the adhesion of coal bricks to each other and to the interior surfaces of barges, railcars, containers, and trucks. Once this energy source reaches the power plants, potassium acetate is again used, this time to anti-ice conveyor belts which deliver the coal to its final destination.
As an SAE AMS 1435A-certified anti-icer/deicer, potassium acetate is used by airports throughout the world on runways, taxiways, and peripheral roads. Potassium acetate has largely replaced glycols at airports. It is a safer and far more environmentally-friendly alternative to ethylene glycol, and is preferred over propylene glycol at most airport facilities. It may also be used as an aircraft lavatory antifreeze.
